Getting Started with Broadband Telephony
Want to put your broadband connection to good use: making long distance for less for instance? Well you are at the right place and help is at hand.
Before we get started with the telephony aspect of Broadband Telephony, you’ll need a broadband connection to the Internet, preferably 128kbps and up. Next you need to find out how you’d like to make calls: PC-to-PC, PC-to-Phone, or Phone-to-Phone.
Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. For PC-based services, you can’t call someone when someone else is using the PC, or when it is down. But if you already have a PC there is no investment to make. If you want to do phone-to-phone, you’ll be tied to a location. Your account won’t travel with you to other cities and countries. That’s why many people use a clever mix of both.
For PC-based service, there is nothing much to do really. All you need is a good VoIP software phone (softphone). You can find more about the leading softphone service providers here.
If you’re interested in phone-to-phone service, there is some homework that you need to do. First, you’ll need to find out where (country and region) you’d want your phone number to be based. You can search voip-list.com for providers in your country and region. After a brief comparison, you should be able to settle down on a provider. Remember to use the scour the Internet for reviews.
Once you subscribe, the provider will give you a phone number, and a phone adapter. If you don’t get any hardware, you’ll need to buy yourself a phone adapter. You can get more details on choosing VoIP phone adapters here. However, before buying an adapter make sure it is compatible with your VoIP service provider.
After a few configuration steps, all you need to do is plug the adapter to your broadband connection and a plain-old telephone to the adapter to make your first call!
